I have sometimes been accused of having chain lube running in my veins, but if I do, it is because I was born with it.
I remember my first job at Hall Bicycle was when I was about 5 or 6, and I “helped” by pushing bike boxes down the stairs into the basement when a truckload of bicycles was being delivered. I think I made a quarter, although I never reported it to the IRS, so don’t turn me in!
I started working here part time when I was about 14, which was about a million years ago. I graduated from the University of Iowa in 1977, where I majored in swimming and goofing off, and I started full time as soon as I finished at Iowa.
I have been married to Kathy for 30 plus years, with 2 children, Kate, married to Dan Holtkamp, and Kyle.
Now that my kids are pretty much on their own, I seem to devote a lot of attention to my 2 “younger children”, Sadie & Scout, my golden retrievers. The nice thing about them is that they never ask for money, and never need new shoes, clothes or books. They do demand dog biscuits quite often, however.
In the 36+ years I have been here, I have seen many changes, not the least of which the expansion of our staff. I have had the pleasure of working with many great individuals, who have contributed to the ongoing success of the business. They have also become good friends, and have made my life much easier because of their hard work and dedication.
I love riding my Cronus CX when I have time, but there always seems to be other demands on my time, like work!
I am very excited to have my son, Kyle, working here full time now that he has graduated from Iowa. I know he is much smarter than his father, and will do a great job! I am hoping that I will be able to start slowing down in the next 5-6 years, and do more riding, and also some fishing, which I have always enjoyed, but have never been able to do much of.
